Navigating around the site

There are five main areas on the site:

  • the header,
  • the top horizontal navigation,
  • the side vertical navigation,
  • the main content area, and
  • the footer.

The header is made up of the Ofgem logo and strap line – this is clickable on all pages other than the homepage – and will always take you back to the homepage.

A quick search facility is on every page of the site at the top right of the screen. You can put in your search term and if it's on the site the search should find it. There is an advanced search which is linked to from underneath the quick search. With this you can tailor your search to look for particular types of document and on particular sites.
Underneath the advanced search is a horizontal menu linking to various auxiliary pages (such as this one).

Top horizontal navigation is the main menu to take you to the main sections of the site.

The side vertical menu, in combination with the "breadcrumb trail" (see below) shows you exactly where you are in the site. The side menu shows you the options in that category and the breadcrumb trail (to the right in the main content area) shows you how many sub-categories you have visited.  You can either go back to the previous page by clicking on the "go back to previous page" menu option at the top of the side menu. (If the previous page option is not there it means you are on the homepage of that section - such as "About us" or "Media"). Also, you can return to the previous page by using the breadcrumb trail.

The main content area is split into two areas. On the left, next to the side menu, is the main content area with the "breadcrumb trail" at the top. On the right is an image and a box headed "Further resources" which contains links to other items of interest such as PDF documents, MS Word or Excel documents or internal or external web links.

The "breadcrumb trail" shows you where you are in the site and where you have been. The final item on the “trail” is the page you are currently viewing (this is not clickable with your mouse). All other items link to their respective pages, so you can use them to jump back one or more pages.

The footer contains five shortcut links to our most viewed pages. Underneath is the copyright information and links to our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions on the use of the site.
